GIVE ME A MILLION DOLLARS!
The AFP reports: The US government announced Monday an expanded bailout for insurance giant AIG of more than 150 billion dollars, as the Treasury tapped into emergency funds originally set for banks.
When I read that kind of news story I can't help but ask, why can't someone just give me a million dollars? I don't drink or do drugs. I have been serving my country in the Air Force for almost 19 years. I don't really have any debt and have avoided making any major financial mistakes. I have not been arrested or done anything illegal. I can't even remember when the last time I received a traffic ticket. Billions of dollars are being thrown all over the place to try and help the economic situation. Many of these problems were caused by people doing things they should have never done. Some of the people responsible for the problems have walked away with millions of dollars. So, why can't someone just give me a million dollars? I will not do anything crazy with the money and it will change my and my family's lives forever. There are peope who could give me a million dollars and it would be like me giving someone 5 dollars. Consider these names:
Mark Cuban: Owner of the Dallas Mavericks. He could send me a check for a million dollars today and it would be no big deal for him but my life would never be the same.
Alex Rodriguez: He plays for the New York Yankees. A million dollars, no big deal!
Bill Gates: No explanation is needed for his name. He's just filthy rich!
Warren Buffett: Wikepedia reports: Warren Edward Buffett (born August 30, 1930) is an American investor, businessman, and philanthropist. He is one of the world's most successful investors and the largest shareholder and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway.[3] He was ranked by Forbes as the richest man in the world during the first half of 2008, with an estimated net worth of $62.0 billion.
I could list names of people all day who could give me a million dollars, but I think I have made the point.
I don't have any sad story to tell in which to persuade people to give me a million dollars. I am healthy and have no horrible disease. No one in my family is in need of an emergency surgery or only has days left to live. I know that kind of situation would probably improve my chances of being given a million dollars but I am sorry. All I have to offer is this. Give me a million dollars and I will be very thankful and it will change my life. I know that is kind of lame! I need something that would really motivate people to part with a million dollars but I don't realy have anything. If I get the milllion dollars I guess I could get out of the Air Force. Ok, I know that none of my arguments are really that persuasive. This is a million dollars I am talking about! So I guess I should try a little harder. Here it goes:
There have been many political speeches given over the last year to persuade people to vote for one canidate or to give money to a campaign. Many speeches have been given about the billions of dollars needed for the bailout to save our economy. So I stand here today, (actually I am sitting as I type this) and I ask those who have become very wealthy to consider a few things. You wake up every day and get to experience what it is like to have the money to buy what you want. You know what it is like to own your own home. You can take trips to places all over the world. You can attend a professional sporting event or a concert whenever you like. What you experience everyday is what the rest of us only dream about. I am not asking you to change the world or do the impossible. I am asking you to change the life of one man and his family. During this political season many promises have been made but I only have one. If I am given the million dollars I promise this...I will have the time of my life spending it!
