Epizootic hemorrhagic disease

I received an e-mail a few hours ago that contained the following information:

With the deer season open, news that outbreaks of epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) has been found in deer from Albany, Rensselaer and Niagara counties [in New York state], is distressing. The diseased deer from Niagara County was reported from the Youngstown area.

When I read the first paragraph I immediately said, "OK, but what is Epizootic hemorrhagic disease?"

Here is what I found out:

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD) is an arthropod-borne viral (arbovirus) of White-tailed Deer in the southeastern United States.

The EHD virus is closely related to the Bluetongue virus and crossreacts with it on many blood tests.

Ohio Department of Natural Resources
Michigan Department of Natural Resources

Here is the rest of the e-mail I received:

Although EHD is not a threat to human health, hunters are advised to wear rubber gloves when field dressing deer. They are also advised to not eat organ meats such as heart or liver and to wash thoroughly any instruments such as knives that come in contact with deer tissue.

Eating any organ meat poses a risk of infections of various types to humans. Hunters are advised to have deer boned out professionally to assure as much fat, connective tissues and lymph nodes [as possible] are removed.

In general, any animal suspected to be ill should not be consumed. If the deer you drop doesn't seem healthy, notify a DEC [Department of Environmental Conservation] officer and if the deer is considered unfit for human consumption, you will be issued another deer tag.Generally, symptoms of an infected animal would be swollen head, neck or tongue, ulcers within the mouth, peeling of hooves and intestinal bleeding and possibly staggering when walking or running.

Animals contract EHD from bites of flies called midges. A heavy frost kills the midges, eliminating the danger of further incidents.[Whether] the deer you take appears healthy or not, the main thing you should always think of is to be as clean as possible.

You cannot wash your hands often enough. Also, check your clothing for any deer ticks that may have jumped from the deer to your clothing. Some deer ticks can carry Lyme disease, which can be fatal to humans.

Don't take a chance. If the deer appears suspicious, call a DEC officer to be on the safe side.

Elevator Music

This week I began to read the book, Elevator Music by Joseph Lanza. I have an older copy then the one pictured above. Over the next few week I am going to post quotes from the book and other interesting information related to the book.

I would like to begin by providing some information about the book:

From Library JournalLanza's book takes "Dentist chair music" lightly, claiming for it a history extending back to Orpheus, who "used" music for his own purposes. Music was first used in elevators in 1922, Lanza claims, to sooth passengers fearful of the new machines. Background music is now a pervasive element of modern technological culture. Lanza thinks background music is often good music. As an underappreciated necessity, it makes our world more pleasant and agreeable. While no deeper than "101 Strings" or "Mystic Moods Orchestra" fare, Lanza's book may make readers feel better about the amalgamation of tastes demanded by the fact that 90 million people listen to Muzak daily.

Here are a few reviews of the book found at Amazon.com

Joseph Lanza Nails His Subject Matter Impressively, February 22, 2000
By
Phil Stout

Lanza's exploration of elevator music, easy listening and all things moodsong is the definitive book for anyone who has an interest in a very misunderstood genre. As someone very close to the Easy Listening and Mood Music programming that quietly ruled FM radio for much of the 70's, let me tell you... Joseph Lanza nails his subject matter impressively. Whether you consider yourself a Percy Faith, Roger Williams or Mantovani fan... or are just curious about these plush, melodic sounds, "Elevator Music: A Surreal History Of Muzak, Easy Listening and Other Moodsong" makes for enjoyable reading. This isn't a book that seeks to cash in on what someone recently decided to call lounge music but an evenhanded evaluation of fascinating, mostly instrumental adult pop music with melodies that always lingered on.

You can purchase your own copy of the book here: Elevator

Today's quote comes from page 2

"But just mention the words Muzak, easy listening, or even contemporary instrumental and many critics will lash out with judgements such as boring, dehumanized, vapid, cheesy. and insult of insults, elevator music. But such reactions appear to based more on cultural prejudice than honest musical appraisal. In these supposedly enlightened times, when people are compelled to think twice before passing blanket judgements on most cultures and their contributions, I find it inconsistent for the press (particularly the music press) ro relegate elevator music to a categorical pejorative with no questions asked. After decades of rock, rhythm and blues, folk, heavy metal, and rap, a desensitized population seems to assume that if music is not hot, heavy, bubbling with a jackhammer rhythms and streaming with emotion or anger, it is somehow less than good or worse less than art.

Not every musician should be obligated to reassure us that we are not zombies. There is also a place for music that is subdued, unobtrusive, even remote or alien.

Outbreak of Severe Pneumonia Traced to Adenovirus 14

Most of the visitors to this blog over the past few day I have arrived here because they were searching for stories about Adenovirus 14.

So I have been doing more research to see what I can learn and I found an older story but it is related and I think many readers may find the information helpful:

Outbreak of Severe Pneumonia Traced to Adenovirus 14
By Charles Bankhead, Staff Writer, MedPage Today
Reviewed by Robert Jasmer, MD; Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine, University of California, San Francisco
October 09, 2007

SAN DIEGO, Oct. 9 --
A potentially deadly form of community-acquired pneumonia linked to adenovirus type 14 has emerged in the Pacific northwest, according to a report presented here.

First encountered in 2005 in Oregon, the viral pneumonia frequently leads to hospitalization and has a 20% fatality rate, Paul Lewis, M.D., of the Oregon State Public Health Department, said at the Infectious Diseases Society of America meeting.

"We recommend obtaining a viral culture in pneumonia patients who lack a specific etiology, especially those with severe disease," said Dr. Lewis. "If adenovirus 14 is detected, anticipate a stormy course. We encourage an infectious disease consultation to discuss the risks and benefits of any specific therapy that might be contemplated."

Recognition of the adenoviral pneumonia began with four patients hospitalized simultaneously at a Portland hospital. Upon comparing notes with physicians at area hospitals, Dr. Lewis and colleagues "almost fell out of our chairs because every hospital we called had recent severe and fatal cases of adenovirus disease."

Investigators followed up the informal communication with a systematic review of all cases of adenovirus disease identified by Oregon clinical laboratories from November 2006 to April 2007. Six months of active surveillance revealed what appeared to be a winter-spring predominant adenovirus disease, as the number of reported cases increased from January through April.

Isolates from the sickest patients were sent to the CDC, which found that almost all the cases involved adenovirus 14, a serotype identified more than 50 years ago but rarely detected since then and never in association with outbreaks.

The Situation in Somalia

If you are a regular reader of this blog you know that for years I have been telling people to watch what is going on in Somalia. Today as I was checking out the number of news sites that I read I saw that Somalia is making headlines again and not for good things!

'One million' homeless in Somalia

One million people are now living rough in Somalia, the UN refugee agency says.

The figure includes 60% of Mogadishu residents who have fled their homes - 200,000 in the past two weeks - leaving many districts empty, says UNHCR.

People have been forced out by renewed conflict between Islamist insurgents and Ethiopian-backed government forces.

Kenya's government has been strongly criticised for deporting 18 failed Somali asylum-seekers. "They are being sent to die," a rights worker said.

Meanwhile, the UN Security Council says it will continue to plan for a peacekeeping mission to Somalia, despite the secretary-general's opposition.

Ban Ki-moon said earlier this month that it was too dangerous to send troops to the war-torn country.

He instead urged countries to help the existing African Union mission.

On Saturday, Islamist insurgents armed with machine guns and grenades attacked the AU base in Mogadishu. Only Uganda has sent troops to the AU force.

To read the rest of this BBC report follow this link: Homeless

Familiar Scenes of Violence Arise in Mogadishu

Last week, a painfully familiar scene unfolded in Mogadishu, Somalia. Somalis triumphantly dragged the body of a dead Ethiopian soldier in the street.

The scene recalled what has become known as the Blackhawk Down incident of 1993, when the bodies of dead U.S. troops met the same fate.

The circumstances of last week's scene are significantly different, but the outcome so far appears just as wretched. Somalia again has become almost too torn to save the living, or respect the dead.

Hepatitis B found

The following is from Newsday.com

Health officials: Hepatitis B found among L.I. doctor's patients

NEW YORK -

Long Island health officials report a positive test for hepatitis among the patients of a physician whose needle technique put hundreds of people at risk.

Officials say they will not know if the patient contracted hepatitis B in the doctor's office for several weeks.

Nassau County Health Department spokeswoman Cynthia Brown says the patient would be retested.

Authorities have also widened their probe to include more of Dr. Harvey Finkelstein's patients.

The physician has defended his reputation as a dedicated caregiver during his more than 20 years in practice.

Health officials became aware of the problem nearly three years before urging more than 600 of Finkelstein's patients to get tested for hepatitis and the HIV virus.

Here is information about Hepatitis B:

Hepatitis B is a serious disease caused by a virus that attacks the liver. The virus, which is called hepatitis B virus (HBV), can cause lifelong infection, cirrhosis (scarring) of the liver, liver cancer, liver failure, and death.
Hepatitis B vaccine is available for all age group

Hepatitis B
Also called: HBV

Hepatitis B is one type of hepatitis – a liver disease- caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV).

Hepatitis B spreads by contact with an infected person's blood, semen or other body fluid. An infected woman can give hepatitis B to her baby at birth.
If you get HBV, you may feel as if you have the flu, or you may have no symptoms at all.
A blood test can tell if you have it.
HBV usually gets better on its own after a few months.
If it does not get better, it is called chronic HBV, which lasts a lifetime.

Chronic HBV can lead to scarring of the liver, liver failure or liver cancer.
There is a vaccine for HBV. It requires three shots.
All babies should get the vaccine, but older children and adults can get it too.
If you travel to countries where Hepatitis B is common, you should get the vaccine.

Killer Cold Virus UPDATED

A few day's ago I posted an article about a new cold virus that is proving to be deadly. Since then I have noticed that many people have found this blog because they were searching for information about this virus. So I am posting an update to help people find all the available information right here.

The following is from the Medpage:

Here is the link and parts of the article are below:

Killer Cold Virus Caused 10 Deaths

ATLANTA, Nov. 16
-- Clinicians should keep their eyes peeled for a mutated form of adenovirus 14 that has caused at least 10 deaths, most of them among adults, the CDC warned.

The new strain of adenovirus 14 differs in that most of its victims have been otherwise healthy adults, CDC officials said.

"What really got people's attention is these are healthy young adults landing in the hospital and, in some cases, the ICU," said John Su, M.D., Ph.D., of the CDC.

But the first case that came to the CDC's attention was a 12-day-old infant who died in a New York hospital in May 2006. The baby girl was full-term and the delivery was uncomplicated, the agency reported.

Postmortem examination found adenovirus 14, as well as chronic inflammatory cells with intranuclear inclusions, in the lungs, consistent with adenoviral bronchiolitis and acute respiratory distress syndrome.

The strain would prove to be genetically identical to isolates found in three clusters of adenovirus 14 disease over the following 18 months, the CDC said, but different in some respects from the reference strain, first isolated in 1955.

The finding suggests "the emergence and spread of a new [adenovirus 14] variant" in the U.S., the agency said in the Nov. 15 issue of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

The later clusters were reported in 2007 in Oregon, Washington state, and Texas, the CDC said.
The largest outbreak took place from Feb. 3 to June 23 at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, where 27 patients were sent to the hospital with pneumonia, including five who were admitted to the intensive care unit.

One of the five required extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for about three weeks and ultimately died. Medical personnel collected throat swabs from 16 of the 27 -- including the intensive care patients -- and all tested positive for the virus.

Also, during that period, medical personnel collected and tested 423 specimens associated with an outbreak of febrile respiratory infection, of which, 268 tested positive for adenovirus. A little less than half of the specimens (44%) were also serotyped and 90% were adenovirus 14.

The deadliest outbreak, identified retrospectively, occurred in Oregon, after a local clinician reported multiple patients admitted to a single hospital for pneumonia over a five-week period in March and April.

Of the 17 specimens obtained, 15 were positive for adenovirus 14, the CDC said, leading Oregon public health authorities to review records from virology labs and find 68 people who tested positive between Nov. 1, 2006, and April 30, 2007.

Of those, 50 isolates could be serotyped and 31 were adenovirus 14, the CDC reported, while 15 were another serotype and four were not actually adenovirus.

Review of medical records for 30 of the 31 with adenovirus 14 showed that 22 patients required hospital care, 16 required intensive care, and seven died, all from severe pneumonia. Most of the dead were adults, but one infant also died.

In contrast, only two of the 13 non-type 14 patients whose charts were available needed hospital care, none needed intensive care, and none died. (See: IDSA: Outbreak of Severe Pneumonia Traced to Adenovirus 14)

In Washington, officials reported four patients -- one with AIDS and three with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease -- with cough, fever, or shortness of breath between April 22 and May 8, 2007.

Three required intensive care and mechanical ventilation for severe pneumonia, and after eight days of hospital care, the AIDS patient died, while the other patients recovered.

All four tested positive for adenovirus and the three with isolates available for serotyping were shown to have adenovirus 14.

The CDC urged clinicians to follow its 2003 guidelines for pneumonia care. Among other things, the guidelines suggested changes in ventilation practices:
Orotracheal rather than nasotracheal tubes should be used in patients who need mechanically assisted ventilation.

Noninvasive ventilation should be used to reduce the need for and duration of endotracheal intubation.

The breathing circuits of ventilators should be changed when they malfunction or are visibly contaminated.

When feasible, an endotracheal tube with a dorsal lumen should be used to allow drainage of respiratory secretions.

Here is a great article from WebMd:
Killer Cold Virus Appears in U.S.
10 Deaths From Outbreaks in 4 States as Ad14 Cold Virus Becomes More Common

Here are a few excerpts from the article:
Nov. 15, 2007 -- A virulent new form of an old cold virus is spreading in the U.S., causing severe pneumonia and death even in healthy adults.

The virus is adenovirus type 14 or Ad14. Since May 2006, when it killed a 12-day-old girl in New York City, there have been 10 deaths among 141 confirmed cases. Except for the infant girl, the cases came in outbreaks in Oregon, Washington, and Texas.

Different adenovirus strains have caused outbreaks in the past. But this seems to be a particularly "challenging" virus, says CDC epidemic intelligence officer John Su, MD, PhD.

The CDC, in the Nov. 16 issue of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, chronicles the four known Ad14 outbreaks.

As I was reading the article the above statement caught my attention:

My question was can I read the Morbidity and Mortality Report: So I did some research and I found it:

This Week in MMWR
November 16, 2007 / Vol. 56 / No. 45
Acute Respiratory Disease Associated with Adenovirus Serotype 14

Ad14 is a rarely reported but emerging adenovirus serotype that can cause severe and sometimes fatal respiratory illness. In May 2006, an infant in New York died from respiratory illness caused by Ad14. During March--June 2007, a total of 140 additional cases were identified in patients in Oregon, Washington, and Texas; nine of these patients died. Ad14 isolates from the four states were identical to one another but distinct from the Ad14 reference strain from 1955, suggesting emergence of a new Ad14 variant in the United States.

Philip Schneider

The name Philip Schneider probably means absolutely nothing to you but if you were to do a Google search you would find that much has been written about him.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Philip Schneider (April 23, 1947 - January 17, 1996)
was a geologist and structural engineer, who became known in the early 90's for giving lectures about his alleged work inside top secret facilities being built by the United States government. He claimed to have been working especially with the construction of military underground bases, using technologies which he claimed were deliberately being held back from the public, along with other classified technologies including alien spacecraft technology.

Two years prior to his death, Schneider resigned from his military employment, and went on a continuous lecturing tour talking about government cover-ups, black budgets, and UFOs. He claimed that enormous sums of money are being used in "black budgets", figures that are not shown in official statistics, this money financing the classified projects mentioned.

On 1/17/1996, he was found dead in his home - from what looked like a suicide. The later autopsy would determine the cause of death to be suffocation by the wrapping of a rubber hose round Schneider's neck - believed to be self inflicted.

Schneider's ex-wife, Cynthia Drayer believes that Philip was murdered because he publicly revealed the truth about the U.S. government's involvement in sinister activities.

She wrote a letter after his death explaining why she felt this was a murder:

CHINA IS CONTROLLING THE WEATHER

Is China trying to control the weather?

Consider the following stories:

China Leads the Way in Weather Control

From CNN.com

HONG KONG, China (CNN) --

Beijing will be shooting for the stars in a bid to stave off downpours when it hosts the Olympics Games in 2008.

Using an arsenal of rockets, artillery and aircraft, China will try to blast the clouds out of the sky, a meteorologist told a Beijing magazine, through a technique which falls under the umbrella of "cloud seeding."

"We can turn a cloudy day into a dry and sunny one by shooting the clouds less intensively than when we make rain," head meteorologist Mian Donglian for the Beijing municipal weather bureau told Time Out.

Here is another report:

Can China control the weather?

The following is a few paragraphs from this report:
China Leads Weather Control Race

Not content to push the edge in cloning, architecture and geological engineering, China's also leaving the rest of the world behind when it comes to controlling the weather.

few years ago, Australian journalist John Taylor reported,

It's uncanny living in Beijing how it rains on the eve of major events. Be it a big domestic event, or a visiting foreign politician, the rain has usually fallen the day before, making for temporary blue skies free of the normal haze.

Chinese officials say cloud seeding has helped to relieve severe droughts and water shortages in cities. In Shanghai officials are considering the measure to cool the daytime temperature, easing demand for electricity.

Paranormal Researchers Create New Device

Paranormal Researchers Create New Device
Press Release, 16 November 2007

The Association for the Study of Unexplained Phenomenon (ASUP,Inc) a non-profit 501(c)(3) research and educational corporation dealing with the paranormal and dedicated to the study of theories concerning the survival of the human consciousness after death, has announced today that their research and development staff has completed work on a prototype device similar to what is commonly called FRANK’s BOX, after it's original inventor, Frank Sumption, that has been claimed to be a working, “telephone to the dead.” The ASUP began fabricating their device after they learned that the original “box” would not be made available for serious research by groups like their own.

Honda FCX Clarity

The following was found at the Auto Blog

The Honda FCX Clarity is hugely important because it represents an honest to goodness fuel-cell vehicle that is going to actually be built and sold in 2008. The significance of a vehicle that spits water out of its exhaust instead of carbon is lost on virtually nobody, and it looks like Honda will be the first out of the gate. Honda has created a clever commercial to show how important its new accomplishment is, and it involves a bunch of thugs shooting it out with water guns. It's good stuff, and you can view it by clicking the read link below.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A new and virulent strain of adenovirus, which frequently causes the common cold, killed 10 people in parts of the United States earlier this year and put dozens into hospitals, U.S. health officials said on Thursday.

A U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report detailed cases of people ill in May of 2006 and from March to June of 2007 with a strain of the virus called adenovirus 14 in New York, Oregon, Washington state and Texas.

"Whether you're a healthy young adult, an infant or an elderly person, this virus can cause severe respiratory disease at any age," said John Su, who investigates infectious diseases for the CDC and contributed to the report.

MUSIC TO RELAX WITH

I love music of many kinds and styles and I never care what people may think. I am also not concerned if my music is not perceived as "hip" or in "style". So with that in mind I would suggest every one check out the following CD:

Here is a review of the album found at Amazon.com

A creative and moving interpretation of the original music., July 27, 1999
By
JIM MASTERS "host" (New England, USA) -

I'm a huge fan of instrumental versions of popular music. Sometimes called "Easy Listening." I have tons of cd's and tapes of this format. I wish it was easier to come by. It's hard stuff to find these days. I own this cd, as well as, several others by Richard Clayderman. I think it's one of the best instrumental interpretations of the original collection. It should'nt be directly compared to the original because it is instrumental! However, this cd molds the original with some Clayderman flair. I'd recommend to anyone who can still find it. This stuff becomes collector's item music fast.

Conspiracy News

I received an e-mail a few days ago that claimed many things. Here is a sample of what was contained in the e-mail:

The U.S. plans for a nuclear attack on the Republic of Iran have been recycled, and a false-flag nuclear detonation in the United States is planned. The weapon to be used here has been officially released for deployment and could be used at any time.

I forwarded the e-mail to James Willis who is the author of the blog, 'The Willis University".

He has posted the entire e-mail: You can read it here: NUCLEAR WAR ALERT

What interested me about the e-mail was the use of the term "False Flag". I did a little research and here is what I found out:

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

False flag operations are covert operations conducted by governments, corporations, or other organizations, which are designed to appear as if they are being carried out by other entities. The name is derived from the military concept of flying false colors; that is, flying the flag of a country other than one's own. False flag operations are not limited to war and counter-insurgency operations, and have been used in peace-time; for example, during Italy's strategy of tension.

You can read the entire entry here: False Flag

The following was found at the George Washington's Blog

Wednesday, December 28, 2005

An Introduction to False Flag Terror

It is widely known that the Nazis, in Operation Himmler, faked attacks on their own people and resources which they blamed on the Poles, to justify the invasion of Poland.

And it has now been persuasively argued -- as shown, for example, in this History Channel video -- that Nazis set fire to their own government building and blamed that fire on others (if you have trouble playing the clip, it is because the website hosting the clip requires you to download the clip before playing it).

The fire was the event which justified Hitler's seizure of power and suspension of liberties. And in the early 1950s, agents of an Israeli terrorist cell operating in Egypt planted bombs in several buildings, including U.S. diplomatic facilities, then left behind "evidence" implicating the Arabs as the culprits (one of the bombs detonated prematurely, allowing the Egyptians to identify the bombers). Israel's Defense Minister was brought down by the scandal, along with the entire Israeli government. See also this confirmation.

And the Russian KGB apparently conducted a wave of bombings in Russia in order to justify war against Chechnya and put Vladimir Putin into power. The Turkish government has carried out bombings and blamed it on the PKK in order to justify a crackdown on that group.

This is called "false flag terrorism", where a government attacks its own people then blames others in order to justify its goals.

The goal of the Worldview blog is to inform people of the different Worldviews that are present.

The Internet net today is exposing people to more conspiracy theories then ever before. In fact more and more people are being influenced by these stories. I cannot say I agree with many of the claims but I do find the stories very interesting.

Somali rebels attack peacekeepers

It was June 2006 when I posted a few articles telling everyone to watch Somalia . I felt that events occurring there could become an issue for the U.S. Government. Today I want to point people to more information concerning Somalia. You can read some of my previous post on Somalia here: Past Post

Here is the lastest news:

Somali rebels attack peacekeepers

Uganda has some 1,700 soldiers in Somalia as part of the AU missionIslamist insurgents armed with machine guns and grenades have attacked an African Union base in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, the force said.

At least one rebel was killed when the Ugandan peacekeepers returned fire but the AU said it sustained no casualties.

The attack comes two days after rebel leader Sheikh Aden Hashi Ayrow ordered his fighters to target AU troops.

Uganda has some 1,700 soldiers in Somalia as part of the planned 8,000-strong AU peacekeeping mission.

The overnight raid on AU troops in Mogadishu's K-4 neighbourhood led to a 90-minute battle.

Global Warming ‘Greatest Scam in History’

This is a story that is making it's way across the internet:

John Coleman was the founder of the Weather Channel. Currently he is the meteorologist for KUSI television in San Diego, California. The following is an excerpt from his blog dated Nov. 7, 2007

It is the greatest scam in history. I am amazed, appalled and highly offended by it. Global Warming; It is a SCAM. Some dastardly scientists with environmental and political motives manipulated long term scientific data to create an illusion of rapid global warming. Other scientists of the same environmental whacko type jumped into the circle to support and broaden the “research” to further enhance the totally slanted, bogus global warming claims. Their friends in government steered huge research grants their way to keep the movement going. Soon they claimed to be a consensus.

What is a Blog?

Anyone reading this post already knows what a Blog is but there are still millions of people who if you tell them that your hobby is blogging will say, "you do what?" They have no idea what you are talking about and may think you are doing something that should not be talked about in public.

So to help educate the masses, here is a short post on blogging:

What is a blog?

The following is from : Wikipedia:

blog (a portmanteau of web log) is a website where entries are written in chronological order and commonly displayed in reverse chronological order. "Blog" can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.

Many blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject; others function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability for readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs. Most blogs are primarily textual, although some focus on art (artlog), photographs (photoblog), sketchblog, videos (vlog), music (MP3 blog), audio (podcasting) and are part of a wider network of social media. Micro-blogging is another type of blogging which consists of blogs with very short posts.

As of September 2007, blog search engine Technorati was tracking more than 106 million blogs

Short for "Web log," a specialized site that allows an individual or group of individuals to share a running log of events and personal insights with online audiences. Blogs with political or current-events themes have grown in popularity and become "soap boxes" for instant mass-audience commentary.www.pvt.com/oth/glossary.htm

Web LOG is a journal kept on the Internet. This journal is often updated daily and contains all information that the person maintaining the BLOG (the blogger) wishes to share with the world. ...www.avatar.co.nz/resources/web-site-design-web-marketing-definitions-b.html

Like an online dairy. This can be about and be used for anything at all, it can be used for news, reviews, products etc for a business, organisation etc. This is great as it helps the user stay in touch with the website with new and up to date information.germworks.net/blog/2007/02/11/web-jargon-explained/

A blog is information that is instantly published to a Web site. Blog scripting allows someone to automatically post information to a Web site. The information first goes to a blogger Web site. Then the information is automatically inserted into a template tailored for your Web site.mason.gmu.edu/~montecin/netterms.htm

A BLOG is a publication of personal thoughts, experiences, and web links. It is updated frequently and is usually a mixture of what is happening in a person's life and what is happening on the web or in the media. ...www.simplehostfinder.com/glossary.html

A ROBOT COCKROACH

From NPR:

All Things Considered, November 15, 2007 ·

To explore how groups of cockroaches make collective decisions, scientists have created a robotic cockroach that the real insects accept as one of their own.

The robot doesn't look anything like a cockroach to human eyes.

"It looks like an electronic matchbox," said Jose Halloy, a researcher at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium. But that doesn't matter, he says, "because in fact it has to look like a cockroach from a cockroach perspective."

Basically, it has to smell like a cockroach. The scientists coat the boxy robots with a chemical, a cockroach smell, so the real roaches won't run away.

"The cockroaches are not at all stressed by the robots because they are perceived as cockroaches," Halloy said. "So the cockroach is just accepting that kind of strange buddy. And that's the start of the game."

The game was to see if researchers could use this robot to figure out how roaches make group decisions. "Cockroaches are gregarious insects, so they live in groups," Halloy said. They don't live in complex societies like bees or ants, he said, but roaches do make choices.

For example, they like to rest together. When scientists put cockroaches in a habitat that has two identical little shelters — shadowed places where they can hang out — the roaches will "all gather together in the same shadow, below the same shelter," Halloy said. "So there is a mechanism that makes the system choose one of the shelters."

Halloy and his colleagues suspected that a group decision emerges because every individual follows these simple rules: Wander around randomly, but spend more time in a place if you sense that it is (A) dark and (B) has other cockroaches.

So the researchers made sure their robotic cockroach could follow those rules. The robots had wheels, plus a light sensor and an infrared sensor to detect nearby roaches.

When they put these robots in with the living roaches, they all began to interact. Before long, the robots and cockroaches were huddled together under the same roof. "The robots and the cockroaches behave as a group," Halloy said.

So then the scientists decided to reprogram the robots and change one of their rules. "We change their preference for darkness," Halloy said. "We make the robots prefer lighter places than darker ones."

And they presented the group of robots and roaches with two shelters. One was dark, and one was light.

What the scientists found was that the whole group would generally end up resting in the brighter place, even though normally roaches would prefer a darker one.

The experiment, published in the journal Science, showed that just a few individuals can dramatically alter the behavior of the whole group.

For people whose main interest in cockroaches is trying to kill them, Halloy cautioned that he can't foresee a day when robot roaches lure your kitchen pests into a trap.

"The robot technology is very, very, very low compared to what the insects can do," he said, explaining that the robots can't climb up walls or wander through pipes.

Still, even if it's not good pest control, other researchers say it's great science.

"I think it's a really fascinating idea to integrate robots within animal groups. In actual fact, I really feel that this is the future of doing this kind of research," said Iain Couzin, a researcher at Princeton University who studies how large-scale biological patterns can emerge from individuals' actions.

Couzin said in computer simulations, simple rules for individual behavior can produce virtual schools of fish or flocks of birds that seem to closely mimic the behavior of real animals.

But how do you know these made-up rules are really the ones that animals use?

"There is a danger in that, you know, you create these rules and you get what appears to be the right phenomena, but there's no real way of testing that," Couzin said.

He thinks interactive robots could let scientists do those kinds of tests. Cousin wants to someday build a robot that would swim with the fishes.

And Jose Halloy said he would like to branch out from his work on cockroaches. His next goal? A robot chicken.

Man Dies After Getting Stuck in Girlfriend’s Cat Door

A woman in Florida made a startling discovery over the weekend when she found her boyfriend stuck in her house’s cat door, News4Jax.com reported.

The girlfriend of Charles Tucker Jr., 33, had reportedly kicked him out of her St. Augustine home. Hours later, she found the man stuck in the small door and called police. When they arrived four minutes later, the man was dead, News4Jax.com reported.

Click here to read the News4Jax.com report.

"He's a big guy. I don't even know how he could fit through there," Tucker’s friend, Will Elliot told News4Jax.com. "Probably to get in and unlock the door. They said he had one arm through there and his head was caught in there like he was to reach up and unlock the door because there's no way he could fit through there."

Cops are currently awaiting autopsy results.

New African ape fossil discovered

The following report was found at the BBC News website. The report sees the theory of evolution as being fact and not a theory. I will try to post any articles that looks at this discovery from a different point of view.

The fossil of an ape that lived 10 million years ago could hold clues to the dawn of human evolution.

The ancient ape appears to be a close relative of the last common ancestor of gorillas, chimps and humans, according to a Kenyan-Japanese team.

The lower jaw bone and 11 teeth, found in volcanic mud deposits in northern Kenya, are unveiled in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Fossils from this critical time period in primate evolution are very rare.
Genetic studies suggest that the ancestors of humans and chimpanzees went along their separate pathways of evolution about five million to seven million years ago.

But until now there has been very little fossil evidence unearthed in Africa from the middle-to-late Miocene Epoch (12 to 7 million years ago), when gorillas, chimps and humans shared a common ancestor.

This has led some experts to propose that apes migrated out of Africa to Europe and Asia, only returning much later.

Study leader Yutaka Kunimatsu of Kyoto University's Primate Research Institute said the latest findings contradicted the so-called "out of Europe" theory.

"Now, we have a good candidate in Africa," he said. "We do not need to think the common ancestor came back from Eurasia to Africa. I think it is more likely the common ancestor evolved from the apes in the Miocene in Africa."

Hard diet

The team plans to return to the eastern edge of the Rift valley in Kenya next year to search for more fossils.

Two of the fossil teethFrom the evidence available - a partial lower jaw and 11 teeth - they have pieced together clues to the ape's dentition and diet.

"The teeth were covered in thick enamel and the caps were low and voluminous, suggesting that the diet of this ape consisted of a considerable amount of hard objects, like nuts or seeds, and fruit," said Dr Kunimatsu.

"We only have some jaw fragments and some teeth... but we hope to find other body parts in our future research," he added.

Professor Fred Spoor, an anatomist at University College, London, UK, said that knowledge of great ape evolution had been hampered by a lack of fossil evidence.

"We have an extra piece in the puzzle of what was going in ape evolution," he told BBC News.
"Perhaps we might start to understand a little more about the common ancestor of African great apes and humans and whether it lived in Africa or Eurasia."

The new species has been christened Nakalipithecus nakayamai. It is the second rare fossil discovery from Africa announced in recent months.

In August, an Ethiopian-Japanese team announced the discovery in Ethiopia of 10-million-year-old teeth from a previously unknown species of great ape, Chororapithecus abyssinicus.

Certain STDs Up Across U.S.

Certain STDs Up Across U.S.

Results of a new study find that in the United States, chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis cases are on the rise.

2006 was the second year in a row that saw an increase in all 3 of the leading sexually transmitted diseases, a fact that worries health professionals a great deal.

The CDC study found that chlamydia cases in 2006 topped the 1 million mark, the most cases to be reported since statistics were kept by the CDC starting in 1984.

Compared to 2005, the rate of positive gonorrhea cases rose by 5.5 percent.

Cases of syphilis jumped 13.8 percent from 2005 to 2006, also a sharp increase in cases.

"This is a hidden epidemic," said Dr. Stuart Berman, who helps tracks STDs for the CDC.

"Most people are not aware of how many STDs are out there, the risks that they run and the need for getting regular testing for some of these and treatment -- and having their partners treated. We'd like to see these rates going down."

"The honest truth is that we're on the early part of the learning curve with populations in which traditional approaches to prevention aren't working as effectively," said John Douglas, CDC's director of STD prevention, in a telephone call with reporters.

"When you see that almost half of these infections are among young people, that tells you we have to do a much better job of sex education in public schools," said Bill Stackhouse, director of the Institute for Gay Men's Health in New York, in a telephone interview today.

Turkey 'bombs PKK Iraq targets'

With the resent news about how much the war in Iraq is costing the United States I find the following report very interesting.

From the BBC
Turkey 'bombs PKK Iraq targets'

Turkish military helicopters have bombed suspected Kurdish rebel positions in northern Iraq, Iraqi officials have said.

Several empty villages and an abandoned police post were hit without causing casualties, the officials said.

The strikes came as Ankara said four Turkish soldiers were killed in a clash with Kurdish rebels in Sirnak province.

Turkey has threatened large-scale attacks into Iraq to prevent Kurdish rebels launching attacks into Turkey.

Restraint urged

Kurdish rebels have killed at least 40 Turkish soldiers and civilians in the past month.

Dozens of rebels have also been killed over the same period, Turkey's military says, during which the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) has stepped up its attacks.

Iraq, Afghan War Costs Are $1.6 Trillion

From the Associated Press:

Iraq, Afghan War Costs Are $1.6 Trillion

Nov 13 10:17 AM US/Eastern
By JEANNINE AVERSA
AP Economics Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - The economic costs of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are estimated to total $1.6 trillion—roughly double the amount the White House has requested thus far, according to a new report by Congress' Joint Economic Committee.

The report, obtained by The Associated Press and scheduled to be released Tuesday, attempted to put a price tag on the two conflicts, including "hidden" costs such as interest payments on the money borrowed to pay for the wars, lost investment, the expense of long- term health care for injured veterans and the cost of oil market disruptions.

The $1.6 trillion figure, for the period from 2002 to 2008, translates into a cost of $20,900 for a family of four, the report said. The Bush administration has requested $804 billion for the Iraq and Afghanistan wars combined, the report stated.

For the Iraq war only, total economic costs were estimated at $1.3 trillion for the period from 2002 to 2008. That would cost a family of four $16,500, the report said.

Future economic costs would be even greater. The report estimated that both wars would cost $3.5 trillion between 2003 and 2017. Under that scenario, it would cost a family of four $46,400, the report said.

My comments:
Whenever a person buys something they usually do so because they feel that they are getting something worth the amount of money they are spending. So my question is simple, exactly what are we getting for $1 Trillion dollars?
